A delegation from the secretariat of the Kurdistan Teachers Union (KTU), which included the president of the KTU, the vice president, and a number of the members of the office, held a meeting with the Minister of education and the advisors at the divan of the ministry of education last week.

During the meeting, the KTU shed light on their demands and requests.

At the beginning of the meeting, both sides discussed educational developments and evaluated the process of education and teaching as very well after school studies began again on 14th September 2021.

Participants of the meeting confirmed that Covid had not been able to stop the process during the current semester.

They also concentrated on the fact that teachers and students especially the ones who are above 12 must be vaccinated against Covid virus so as not to be infected. Then the following demands were directed by the Kurdistan Teachers Union to His Excellency, the Minister of Education:

1. Amendment and reviewing of the curricular which are the focus of the world like the subjects of human rights, the rights of children, environment, climate change, social justice, and gender equality.

2. Reforming in the supervising staff and reorganizing instructions and laws so as to help teachers in improving the process of education and teaching.

3. Training the new teachers to teach their students as well as possible through using technology so that they can teach their students by using the internet ‘electronic or online system, whenever it is necessary.

4. Reviewing the style of holding exams. It must be reorganized in a way that will be suitable for the ability of the students.

For example, there is a big difference between 65 percent of the students who can get benefit from the feeling of seeing things like pictures, history, graphics, and maps in learning and 35 percent of the students who like hearing like written and oral questions. These students are the ones who like activities more.

Five percent of these students like questions that are short definitions, completion, and multiple choices. That’s why these features should be paid importance.

The mentioned subjects and more were talked about in the meeting for the purpose of improving the process of education and teaching.

The Education Minister promised to be the best supporter and helper of the KTU to improve the process of education and teaching in the Kurdistan Region.

He suggested having more meetings in the future. He asked to have some workshops during the current year.
