Iran's only Kurdish handball player becomes asylum seeker in Denmark

Shaqieq Bapiri, Iran's Kurdish handball player, fled from her team on the sidelines of the 2021 World Women's Handball Cup in Spain.
Bapiri has applied for asylum in Denmark, while the championship manager has confirmed the news to a Danish agency.
Shaqieq Bapiri is a Sunni and previously played for the Erbil Women's Club.
The 2021 IHF World Women's Handball Championship, the 25th event by the International Handball Federation, is held in Spain from 1 to 19 December 2021.
On 18 October 2018, at a congress in Doha, Qatar, the IHF announced that the World Championship would be expanded from 24 teams to 32 teams from 2021 onwards. The Netherlands are the defending champions after winning for the first time in 2019.
