Renowned Iraqi Poet Muhammed Mahdi al-Jawahiri.
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi has called for the repatriation of the remains of renowned Iraqi poet Muhammed Mahdi al-Jawahiri, saying Iraq should honour one of its greatest literary and national figures by bringing him back to his homeland.
In a post on X platform marking the anniversary of al-Jawahiri's death, President Amedi said Iraq remembers "a great literary and national figure who contributed to shaping many aspects of modern Iraqi consciousness."
He added that honouring the nation's leading cultural figures requires returning the remains of its celebrated poet to "the land he loved and which loved him."
Referring to one of al-Jawahiri's best-known verses, the President asked: "Hasn't the time come for the mountainside to be revived?" He concluded by expressing hope that the country could make this possible so that "Iraq may embrace its third river"—a poetic reference to al-Jawahiri.
Muhammad Mahdi al-Jawahiri (1899–1997) was a renowned Iraqi poet, widely celebrated as the "Greatest Arab Poet" and the national poet of Iraq. Fusing classical neoclassical mastery with themes of freedom and anti-tyranny, he led the Iraqi Writers' Union before passing away in Syria.
