The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has formally asked FIFA to investigate the officiating of Egypt's 3-2 defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is separately reported to be under investigation by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over its financial operations. The two developments are unrelated.

The EFA lodged its complaint following the last-16 match, alleging serious refereeing and VAR errors that it believes affected the outcome. The association has called on FIFA to review the performance of the officiating team and requested that the officials not be appointed to further matches at the tournament.

FIFA has acknowledged Egypt's concerns but has not announced whether it will open a formal investigation into the match officials.

Separately, Argentine newspapers La Nación and Infobae have reported that the FBI and US federal prosecutors are conducting a preliminary investigation into the Argentine Football Association's (AFA) financial activities in the United States. The reported inquiry centres on allegations of money laundering and other financial irregularities linked to the federation's commercial operations. No criminal charges have been filed, and neither the FBI nor the US Department of Justice has publicly confirmed the reported investigation.

The reported FBI inquiry concerns the AFA's financial affairs and is not related to Argentina's World Cup victory over Egypt or to any allegations of match-fixing or sporting misconduct.

While both developments have attracted widespread attention during the World Cup, there is currently no official FIFA investigation into the Argentina national team over its victory against Egypt.
