Qubad Talabani meets several diplomats in Baghdad.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with 15 European ambassadors to Iraq on the second day of his visit to Baghdad.
During one part of the meeting, which took place on Monday morning, 29 June 2026, discussions focused on the situation in the region, particularly the conflict and tensions between Iran and the United States. In this regard, Talabani clarified the Kurdistan Region's position, stating that the Region's policy and stance have been clear and transparent since the beginning of the conflict. He emphasised that not only will they refuse to become part of any regional or international conflicts, but they will also work alongside their partners, within their own capacity, to defuse tensions and protect the security and stability of their region.
Another segment of the meeting addressed the current situation in Iraq. The Deputy Prime Minister explained that positive steps have been taken recently towards safeguarding Iraq's sovereignty and political independence. He also declared their support for the new Iraqi government, specifically in its efforts to combat corruption. He expressed hope that all political factions would fully back the government in reducing corruption, describing these efforts as a vital and necessary step towards establishing the rule of law and revitalising economic growth.
Regarding the situation within the Kurdistan Region, Talabani pointed out that a new dynamic has emerged in both the region and Iraq as a whole. He warned that in this new landscape, political parties must not deal with one another using the same old mindsets and approaches from the past, as any further delay in forming the government will cause irreparable damage to the Kurdistan Region’s standing.
“At present, the caretaker government has become a weak point for the Kurdistan Region, and this government is incapable of handling the threats and opportunities of this new phase,” said Talabani.
He urged the political parties in the Region to act responsibly, taking the current threats and challenges into account, and to expedite the formation of the next regional government with a fresh perspective.
