Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, visited the Sulaymaniyah Directorate of Environment, where he held a meeting with its directors and senior officials.
At the outset of the meeting, held on Monday (22 June 2026), Talabani congratulated the directorate’s leadership and staff for their efforts in properly managing public services, urging them to further facilitate administrative procedures and improve the delivery of services to citizens.
The primary focus of the meeting was the issue of Tanjaro. Talabani described the Tanjaro problem as an environmental disaster, not only for Sulaymaniyah but for the entirety of Iraq. He stressed that pollution of river water is causing significant harm to public health in several regions across the country, adding that it should therefore be treated as a national issue requiring intervention by the federal Iraqi government.
In this context, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that he will soon hold discussions with senior Iraqi officials in order to seek a resolution to the issue and secure the necessary funding to address it.
The meeting also addressed the need for urgent remedial measures. It was agreed to establish a special committee comprising relevant stakeholders in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, which has been tasked with implementing a number of immediate solutions within a defined timeframe.
