The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that it had carried out airstrikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island, stating that American forces had also intercepted and destroyed several Iranian ballistic missiles and drones.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said the strikes targeted a military ground-control station on Qeshm Island and were conducted in response to attacks across different parts of the Middle East.

Iranian media outlets reported explosions on and around Qeshm Island late on Tuesday night. The Mehr news agency, citing local residents, said blasts were heard in the area, while Fars news agency reported at least three explosions south of the island.

Iranian state-affiliated media, quoting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), claimed Tehran had launched missile and drone attacks against US forces in retaliation for what it described as an American strike on an IRGC communications tower south of Qeshm Island.

Iranian media also quoted the IRGC as saying its naval forces had targeted a vessel named “Banya” with missiles in response to what it described as a US strike on an Iranian oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. Those claims have not been independently verified.

In a separate statement, CENTCOM said US and allied forces had countered what it described as “Iranian aggression” during military operations on 2 June, including the interception of several Iranian missiles and drones.

According to CENTCOM, US forces successfully intercepted projectiles launched from Iran, while several missiles fired towards neighbouring countries failed to reach their intended targets.

The command stated that two missiles aimed at Kuwait either fell short or were destroyed mid-air, while American and Bahraini air defence systems intercepted three missiles directed towards Bahrain. It also said US forces shot down three Iranian attack drones allegedly targeting civilians in territorial waters.

CENTCOM confirmed that no American personnel had been injured and said forces remained on high alert amid the ongoing ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the IRGC announced that it had launched missile strikes against US military bases in Kuwait.

In a statement carried by Iranian media, the IRGC said its Aerospace Force had carried out “precise missile strikes” on American bases in response to what it called US aggression against Qeshm Island. The extent of any damage has not been independently confirmed.

Separately, Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of flights at Kuwait International Airport following the attacks.

The authority said the passenger terminal had come under attack from Iranian drones and missiles, prompting the activation of emergency procedures and the suspension of flights, with some aircraft diverted to alternative airports until further notice.

It also reported injuries and significant damage to several airport facilities.

The Kuwaiti army later confirmed it was closely monitoring developments in coordination with the relevant authorities and stressed the importance of taking all necessary measures to safeguard the country’s security.
