Global consensus renames PCOS to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.
The medical condition widely known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has officially been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), following an international consensus among medical experts and researchers.
The decision was announced after extensive consultations involving clinicians, scientists and patient advocacy groups, with the updated terminology published in the medical journal The Lancet.
Experts said the previous name, PCOS, no longer accurately reflected the complexity of the condition. Although the disorder has traditionally been associated with ovarian cysts, specialists noted that many patients diagnosed with the condition do not have cysts at all.
Medical professionals also stressed that the syndrome affects far more than reproductive health, involving hormonal, metabolic and cardiovascular complications, as well as fertility and mental health concerns.
According to researchers, the new name — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome — is intended to better represent the broader endocrine and metabolic nature of the disorder.
Health experts said the renaming marks an important step towards improving awareness, diagnosis and treatment, while also helping to reduce misunderstandings surrounding the condition.
Despite the official change, doctors expect the term “PCOS” to remain widely used during a transitional period that could continue for several years as healthcare systems, medical literature and public awareness gradually adapt to the updated terminology.
PMOS remains one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting women worldwide and is associated with symptoms including irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal imbalance, weight changes, acne, fertility difficulties and insulin resistance.
