Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, has met with the executive staff of the Tourism Board to discuss the future development of the tourism sector in the Kurdistan Region.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, was attended by Sasan Awni, Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, and Zhwan Sabir, Chairperson of the Tourism Board.

At the outset of the meeting, Talabani expressed his appreciation to the outgoing Chairperson, Amal Jalal, praising her vision and the significant steps taken during her tenure to advance the Region’s tourism sector.

He also congratulated Zhwan Sabir on her appointment as Chairperson, wishing her success in her new role and affirming the government’s readiness to provide full support to further strengthen and expand the sector.

Discussions focused on the current state and future potential of tourism in the Kurdistan Region. Talabani emphasised that there are “significant opportunities” to develop the sector further, noting that it is a key component of the government’s broader strategy to diversify sources of revenue.

He stated that the KRG aims for tourism, in partnership with the private sector, to become one of the main pillars of the Region’s economy.

The Deputy Prime Minister also called for the establishment of a clear and coordinated mechanism between the Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism, the Tourism Board, the private sector, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure effective cooperation and development of the sector.

He further stressed the importance of encouraging private sector investment in tourism, adding that investors should be fully supported and facilitated in order to unlock the sector’s full potential.
