The International Day of Women in Diplomacy is being observed around the world today, recognising the vital role women play in diplomacy, conflict resolution, peacebuilding and international cooperation.

Marked annually on 24 June, the day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2022 to promote the full and equal participation of women in diplomatic decision-making and to highlight their contributions to global affairs.

The observance aims to raise awareness of the challenges women continue to face in diplomacy while encouraging greater representation in leadership positions within foreign ministries, international organisations and diplomatic missions.

Despite progress in recent decades, women remain underrepresented in many areas of international diplomacy. The United Nations has repeatedly stressed that increasing women's participation in peace negotiations, mediation efforts and diplomatic processes contributes to more inclusive and sustainable outcomes.

In the Kurdistan Region, women have increasingly assumed leadership roles in government institutions, parliamentary bodies and international engagement. Female officials have represented the Region at regional and international forums, contributing to dialogue on governance, development, human rights and peacebuilding.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has long advocated for women's participation in political and public life, supporting greater representation of women in leadership positions and decision-making institutions. Women affiliated with the PUK have held senior positions within the party, the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Iraqi Parliament and diplomatic and international institutions, helping to advance policies aimed at promoting equality and expanding opportunities for women.

The PUK has also supported initiatives focused on women's rights, political participation and social development, reflecting its broader commitment to inclusive governance and democratic values. The party continues to emphasise the importance of empowering women as active contributors to political, economic and diplomatic affairs.

The International Day of Women in Diplomacy provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women from Kurdistan, Iraq and around the world who have played important roles in strengthening international relations, promoting dialogue and contributing to peace and stability.

Governments, international organisations and civil society groups are marking the occasion through events, discussions and initiatives aimed at supporting women's leadership in foreign policy and international relations.

The United Nations has called on member states to continue removing barriers to women's participation in diplomacy and to ensure equal opportunities at all levels of decision-making, reaffirming that gender equality remains essential to effective global governance and lasting peace.
