US President Donald Trump announced on Friday a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, set to begin on Saturday.

In a press statement, Trump said the ceasefire would involve a halt to hostilities and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.

He added that efforts to bring an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine — the largest war in Europe since World War II — were continuing.

Russia and Ukraine have both agreed to the ceasefire proposal put forward by Trump. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Moscow had accepted the initiative for a ceasefire from May 9 to 11, alongside a “1,000 for 1,000” prisoner exchange with Kyiv.

He said the initiative followed a recent conversation between Vladimir Putin and Trump, during which the United States remained in contact with Kyiv. He added that the Kremlin viewed the timing of the initiative as significant, as it coincides with the 81st anniversary of Victory Day over Nazism.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine had accepted Trump’s ceasefire proposal with Russia.
