Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi.
Pakistan said on Thursday it expects the United States and Iran to reach an agreement “sooner rather than later,” expressing cautious optimism that diplomacy could help end months of tensions that have disrupted energy markets, unsettled global markets, and raised fears of wider regional escalation.
The remarks came as Islamabad has increasingly positioned itself as a facilitator between Washington and Tehran, after hosting direct talks between the two sides in April that did not produce a deal but helped extend an earlier ceasefire. Outside formal negotiations, Pakistan has also conveyed messages between both sides to support the diplomatic process.
The conflict has heightened concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, raising fears of supply disruptions and rising energy prices.
“We remain optimistic, and I think a simple answer would be that we expect an agreement sooner rather than later,” Foreign Office spokesman Tahir Andrabi said at a weekly briefing in Islamabad.
“We hope that the parties will come to a peaceful, sustainable solution and bring peace to our region and international peace as well.”
Andrabi declined to comment on media reports suggesting the US and Iran were close to a one-page memorandum to end the conflict, saying: “I do not know whether it is a one-page document or a two-page document. That would depend on the parties involved.”
US President Donald Trump has said a deal with Iran was “very possible” following what he described as “very good talks” over the previous 24 hours.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei also said Tehran was reviewing a US proposal aimed at ending the conflict and would convey its response through Pakistan as mediator.
