A volcano in the central Philippines erupted early on Tuesday, sending a plume of ash approximately 800 metres into the sky and prompting authorities to maintain the existing alert level.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), eruptions from Mount Kanlaon occurred shortly after dawn, with ash drifting westward. Alert Level 2 remains in effect, indicating heightened volcanic unrest, local media reported.

Over the past 24 hours, the volcano has recorded multiple ash emissions and volcanic earthquakes, alongside increased sulphur dioxide levels and continued ground deformation.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the four-kilometre permanent danger zone due to the risk of sudden eruptions.
