Iraqi President Nizar Amedi arrived on Monday, 13 April 2026, at Jalal Talabani International Airport for a visit to Sulaymaniyah.

He was received at the airport by Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, Head of the Protection Council of the Higher Interests of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Rifaat Abdullah, Vice President of the PUK, Haval Abubakr, the Governor of Sulaymaniyah, and a number of members of the PUK Political Bureau.

President Amedi also visited the mausoleum of President Mam Jalal in Dabashan, Sulaymaniyah, where he was received by the office of Mam Jalal’s secretariat.

He laid a wreath on the tomb and wrote in the memorial book that the spirit of Mam Jalal remains with him, adding: “Iraq is well and will remain well, and Kurdistan is well too.”

He further stated: “The foundations, principles, and approach you established alongside other Iraqi leaders will remain our path as we complete what you envisioned.”

Speaking to journalists afterwards, President Amedi said: “If we follow the path laid out by President Mam Jalal, we are on the right course.” He added that he had spent a long period with Mam Jalal, describing him as a great Iraqi leader, mentor, and personal guide whose legacy would remain enduring.

He emphasised that Mam Jalal’s spirit “lives on with us forever.”
The President also noted that despite the difficult circumstances in the region, Iraq had successfully elected the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of Parliament, followed by the President of the Republic—describing these as important steps.

He added that the candidate of the largest parliamentary bloc, acting as the Coordination Framework, should be tasked by the President of the Republic with forming the next government, which he said should be fully empowered.

He reiterated the need to keep Iraq away from regional wars and tensions.
