The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement today, Thursday, marking the anniversary of Iraq’s liberation.

The statement reads as follows:

Today marks 23 years since the collapse of a quarter-century of dictatorial rule under Saddam Hussein, and 35 years of Ba’athist governance. This day is recognised in political discourse as the liberation of Iraq.

Saddam and his regime committed some of the most appalling and brutal crimes against advocates of progress and freedom, as well as against national and religious communities. They carried out acts of genocide against the Kurdish people and drew Iraq into three unsuccessful wars. This stands as clear evidence of the grave threat the regime posed to humanity at large, and to regional stability in particular.

Accordingly, 9 April marked the end of dictatorship and the beginning of a new era of freedom and democracy in Iraq, in which the Kurdish people played an active role in rebuilding the country.

On this occasion, all communities and components share the responsibility of safeguarding post-dictatorship Iraq—an Iraq in which the rights of all are equally upheld, and where legal and constitutional principles provide the lasting foundation for unity.
