The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has stated that the election of President Mam Jalal as Iraq’s first Kurdish president was a source of hope for all Iraqis, and that his legacy continues to inspire efforts to advance the project of a federal, democratic state.
In a statement marking the 21st anniversary of Mam Jalal’s election as President of the Republic of Iraq in 2005, the Political Bureau said:
"Following the fall of the former dictatorial regime, 6 April became a landmark day in Iraq’s history, as it marked the first time a President of the Republic was elected.
On 6 April 2005, Mam Jalal—a Kurd and Peshmerga fighter—was elected President of Iraq for the first time in the country’s history.
His election was regarded as a source of hope for Iraqis of all backgrounds, as his wise leadership helped steer the country away from numerous dangers during his tenure.
Alongside his official and diplomatic responsibilities on the international stage, he also played a unifying role among Iraq’s political parties and factions, earning him the title “Iraq’s safety valve.”
From that moment until his sudden health crisis, Iraq moved away from dictatorship towards democracy, freedom, and electoral politics—ushering in a new chapter in the country’s history.
President Mam Jalal consistently prioritised dialogue and mutual understanding as the only means of resolving both national and international issues, including the most complex disputes. He opposed escalation and tension, a principle that helped bring Iraqi forces together and maintain balance in international relations.
Today, as Iraq faces a difficult period marked by internal divisions and external threats, there is a renewed need to return to the wise approach of President Mam Jalal in order to address current challenges effectively.
This anniversary stands as an inspiration for all, reinforcing the goal of building a democratic, federal state founded on partnership and collective action."
