The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi Parliament has issued a statement regarding the attack on the residence of the President of the Kurdistan Region, stressing the need for an immediate and transparent investigation to identify those responsible.
The statement reads:
“We are following with deep concern and alarm the reports of the attack on the guesthouse of the President of the Kurdistan Region, Mr Nechirvan Barzani, in Duhok. This attack is not only directed at a national figure, but also represents a clear assault on the security and sovereignty of both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
This act constitutes a grave violation of all legal and moral norms, and a desperate attempt to undermine stability in what has been considered a secure area of Duhok.
At the same time, it is a terrorist act that cannot be justified under any circumstances, and its primary objective is to spread fear among peaceful civilians.
We call on the federal government and the relevant security authorities to launch an immediate and transparent investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice so they may face appropriate legal consequences.”
