Dr Faraidun Muradi.
A scientific text on the Halabja massacre is set to be introduced into primary school curricula in Sweden, marking a significant step in raising awareness of the tragedy among younger generations.
Dr Faraidun Muradi, who prepared the material, confirmed that it will be incorporated into the fourth and sixth grade syllabuses. The text explores the events of 1988, when more than 5,000 people were killed in one of the deadliest chemical attacks against civilians.
According to Dr Muradi, the material has been developed using a scientific approach, with the aim of educating students about the role of science—particularly chemistry—while highlighting the devastating consequences of its misuse. The text seeks to both inform and engage pupils by linking historical events with scientific understanding.
This marks the first time the Halabja massacre has been formally included in Sweden’s school curriculum, an achievement attributed to the efforts of Dr Muradi, a researcher and specialist in chemical weapons at the University of Gothenburg.
