Kurds Kurdistan Region Iraq Newroz

Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed released a message on the occasion of Newroz, declaring: “May this historic celebration of Newroz mark a year in which the long-standing aspirations of our nation are realised and bring an end to the hardships that have afflicted our people.”

The Iraqi First Lady's Newroz message said:

"Dear citizens,

Happy Newroz and the beginning of the Kurdish New Year to all sincere and patriotic Kurds. I hope that the coming year will mark the fulfilment of our nation’s long-held aspirations and bring an end to the hardships endured by our people.

I also extend my congratulations to all nations that celebrate Newroz and regard it as part of their rich cultural heritage.

Regrettably, the past year has been marked by a devastating war in the region, resulting in significant loss of life and property, affecting not only our people but also neighbouring countries. Our people have been drawn into the consequences of this conflict without their will, and once again risk becoming victims of wider power struggles. It is my hope that political wisdom in Kurdistan will help preventing further escalation and ensuring that the Kurdish people emerge from this period with dignity and resilience.

The past year has also been particularly difficult and uneven. Our people in West Kurdistan [Rojava] have faced grave threats, including attempts at elimination. However, through their heroic resistance and the unprecedented solidarity shown across all parts of Kurdistan and by Kurds abroad, these challenges have, to some extent, been overcome.

I extend my sincere thanks to my compatriots in every village and city of South Kurdistan for your courageous and steadfast support for your brothers and sisters in Rojava. You took to the streets, raised your voices, and showed the world a powerful example of resistance. Happy Newroz to you all — it is your spirit that keeps the fire of Newroz burning in our hearts.

My dear brothers and sisters, just as our hearts remain with all parts of Kurdistan, we also stand in solidarity with our people in the East [Iranian Kurdistan], who continue to face difficult living conditions and uncertainty. While they are best placed to determine their own path, we reaffirm our unwavering support for them and hope that they will overcome current challenges with pride and success.

I also extend my congratulations on Newroz to the descendants of the late Kurdish leader Qazi Muhammad, honouring his legacy on this meaningful occasion.

We have long known that in the North [Kurdistan of Türkiye], the warm heart of Kurdistan, Newroz has become a symbol of resistance. Tens of millions of patriotic Kurds gather around its fire with hope, facing the future with courage and determination. I hope that, through their steadfast resistance and the ongoing peace process in that part of Kurdistan, Newroz will shine even more brightly and that the coming year will bring the fulfilment of their national aspirations.

On this day, we also remember the people of Kirkuk, Khanaqin, and Shingal [Sinjar], whose sacrifices and suffering remain in our thoughts. May your homes be filled with light and hope.

In conclusion, Newroz is a celebration of life, renewal and prosperity. We look to the future with optimism, guided by a spirit of peace and unity.

Happy Newroz to all Kurds."
