The first convoy of IDPs from Afrin left Qamishli for Hasakah on Monday, 9 March 2026, as part of preparations for their return to Afrin under an agreement between the 29 January Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Damascus government.

According to local sources, around 400 families are returning to the districts of Shiyeh, Jindires and Mabata, travelling in 50 buses, 75 trucks and dozens of private vehicles.

Rohilat Afrin, a member of the General Command of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), said that ensuring the dignified return of IDPs from Afrin and Sari Kani to their homes, as well as securing the release of prisoners, remains a key priority in the process of Syrian reunification.

She added that meetings with the Damascus authorities are continuing to advance these objectives.
