The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a statement on the 35th anniversary of the Kurdish uprising against the Ba’athist regime in the spring of 1991.
On this historic occasion, 5 March, marking the start of the uprising which culminated in victory across Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, Duhok, and Kirkuk — often regarded as the Quds of Kurdistan — we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all members of our people who courageously participated, alongside the PUK’s organisational cells and the Peshmerga forces, in overthrowing the defunct dictatorial regime and ensuring the uprising’s success.
The great uprising gave rise to our people’s democratic experience, a source of pride for all Kurds. This government, with its achievements despite numerous challenges, offers hope for a brighter future for our Region, founded on reform, the strengthening of institutions, and the development of a democratic, federal state.
As we commemorate this national and patriotic anniversary, and await the fulfilment of constitutional entitlements and power-sharing in Iraq, our Region is witnessing a fierce and ongoing conflict whose outcome remains uncertain.
At this critical moment, we must act with the same sense of Kurdish responsibility and the spirit of the uprising, intensifying our efforts to avert the dangers of war and protect our country and people. This can only be achieved through a unified Kurdish national policy, enabling us to overcome stagnation within the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, and to prepare for future challenges.
Glory and honour to the memory of the uprising, and eternal life to the pure souls of all martyrs who gave their lives for its success.
May Kurdistan be safeguarded and forever exalted.
