Today, Tuesday, the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) convened in the presence of Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the PUK. A number of key issues were discussed during the meeting.
President Bafel briefed the Bureau on his meeting with President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy, Tom Barrack, and with Mazloum Abdi. Discussions focused on ensuring a constitutional Syria in which the rights of all communities are safeguarded, and on the importance of implementing the 29 December agreement between Syria and the Syrian Democratic Forces.
The meeting also addressed the ongoing war, confrontation and security tensions. The PUK reaffirmed its belief that the most effective solution lies in returning to the negotiating table and resolving disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding. The PUK emphasised that its foremost priority is the protection of the citizens in the Kurdistan Region and the preservation of Iraq’s sovereignty. President Bafel stated that the PUK stands ready to utilise its wide-ranging and influential relations in the interest of peace, stability and development in Iraq in particular, and the wider region.
Another significant matter discussed was the content of the telephone conversation between President Trump and President Bafel, during which President Trump outlined the United States’ objectives in the war. He also expressed his appreciation for the PUK’s role in Iraq.
During the meeting, President Bafel noted that the call provided an opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of US goals and to discuss joint support for strengthening a robust US–Iraq partnership.
