As part of ongoing reform efforts within the Peshmerga forces, administrative, financial, legal and relations authorities have been delegated to regional commanders within the Ministry of Peshmerga.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 26 February 2026, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) confirmed that these powers were transferred as part of the broader process of organising and unifying the Peshmerga forces.
The KRG explained that the move responds to the wishes of its allies and the various components of the Ministry of Peshmerga, and falls within the framework of a strategic agreement aimed at unifying the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces.
It further emphasised that the Ministry of Peshmerga has made considerable efforts and worked intensively to ensure the success of this process.
In this regard, the Ministry stated that the decision represents an important step towards establishing a unified military structure within the Peshmerga forces.
Under the new decision, regional commanders within the Ministry of Peshmerga will assume their designated responsibilities in the administrative, financial, legal, media and relations spheres.
Accordingly, regional leaders will formally carry out their duties within the legal framework and under the guidance of the Ministry of Peshmerga.
