Kurdish parties in the Khanaqin district met today, Thursday, with the General Board for Kurdistani Areas Outside the Region.

The meeting focused on the recent decision to elevate the Gulala (Jalawla) sub-district of Khanaqin to the status of a full district. Attendees reaffirmed that the decision is unconstitutional.

Fahmi Burhan, Chairman of the Board, told a press conference covered by PUKMEDIA: “Current attempts to alter the demographics of Khanaqin district are unconstitutional and violate Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution.”

He added: “We reject any unconstitutional measures to change the administrative boundaries of the disputed areas. We will work collectively to prevent these illegal actions and will not abandon the people of Khanaqin. It is our duty, at both governmental and popular levels, to support Khanaqin district.”

Burhan also stated: “We will coordinate with the federal government to halt these unconstitutional decisions. We thank all Kurdish parties for their stance and support in confronting these threats, and we also commend the people of Khanaqin for their democratic and peaceful protests against the decision to elevate Gulala sub-district into a district.”

He further emphasised: “The decision to separate Gulala sub-district from Khanaqin is politically motivated, unconstitutional, and entirely at odds with Article 140 of the Constitution and the principles of peaceful coexistence.”
