Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Géza Andreas von Geyr, State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office, to discuss recent developments in the region.

The meeting took place in Erbil on Wednesday, with Daniel Krebber, Germany’s Ambassador, also in attendance. The two sides exchanged views on regional affairs, with von Geyr noting that the area is experiencing new developments and emphasising Germany’s support for maintaining peace and stability.

On the situation in Iraq, both parties agreed that the process of forming a new government should be accelerated. They highlighted that the incoming government must prioritise the interests of Iraq, safeguard its sovereignty and independence, and work to prevent complications or instability.

Regarding the Kurdistan Region, they stressed the importance of Kurdish unity at this stage, enabling the region to play a significant role in Iraq and contribute to overall security and stability.

The meeting also addressed the continuing threat posed by ISIS, which remains a serious concern for regional security, and underscored the need to enhance coordination and security cooperation.

In addition, they discussed the role of the remaining German forces in Kurdistan and Iraq. Talabani expressed his gratitude to the German government, particularly for its support in training and integrating the Peshmerga forces.
