The Mexican Army has killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho”, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. The operation, which received intelligence support from the United States, marked a major blow to one of Mexico’s most notorious criminal organisations.

El Mencho, wanted for drug trafficking, organised crime, and violent attacks across multiple states, was fatally wounded during the raid and later died while being transported for medical attention.

Following the announcement, violence erupted across several states, including Jalisco and Michoacán, as cartel members reportedly set vehicles on fire, established roadblocks, and clashed with security forces. Schools, public transport, and local businesses in affected areas temporarily suspended operations amid heightened security measures.

The Mexican government called for calm, stating that security forces are mobilised to restore order. Officials said the operation demonstrates the state’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks that threaten public safety.

The CJNG, under El Mencho’s leadership, became one of the country’s largest and most violent criminal organisations, controlling significant drug trafficking routes and supply chains, particularly for fentanyl and methamphetamine. The United States had offered a multi‑million‑dollar reward for information leading to his capture.

Authorities have warned that retaliatory attacks by cartel members may continue in the coming days as the security situation remains volatile.
