The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) has officially announced the renaming of Sulaymaniyah International Airport to Jalal Talabani International Airport, in accordance with an amendment issued in its Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP).

The name change will take effect on 19 March 2026. From that date, the new designation will be adopted in all official correspondence, aeronautical charts, and related technical documentation.

The measure forms part of official updates within the civil aviation sector, including amendments to airport codes, signage, and associated technical data.

On 3 October 2025, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani directed that the airport be renamed in honour of the late President Jalal Talabani, in recognition of his historic role and long struggle against the former dictatorial regime.

Earlier, on 30 September 2025, Ministry of Transport spokesperson Maitham al-Safi announced that Prime Minister al-Sudani and Transport Minister Razzaq al-Muhaibis had approved the request to change the airport’s name.
