Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, Vice President of the Kurdistan Region, marked the International Mother Language Day, reaffirming that preserving the Kurdish language is both a national and humanitarian responsibility.

The Kurdistan Region VP’s message for the occasion read:

On International Mother Language Day — a day that reflects the identity of nations — we extend our warmest congratulations to the Kurdish nation, to the people of Kurdistan, and to all ethnic communities across Kurdistan and Iraq.

On this important occasion, we reiterate our commitment to enriching Kurdish culture and to preserving and promoting the Kurdish language, as preserving our language is a national and humanitarian duty incumbent upon us all. It is essential that every individual plays an active role in safeguarding and strengthening it.

Defending our mother tongue, Kurdish, is in essence defending our very existence. It is a fundamental pillar in preserving our national identity and ensuring its continuity for future generations.

We also take this opportunity to commend and express our appreciation to all intellectuals, cultural figures and teachers who have tirelessly contributed to the development and enrichment of Kurdish language and culture. Their dedicated efforts remain worthy of the highest respect and recognition.
