Jonas Sjöstedt, a Member of the European Parliament, visited the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and areas in Western Kurdistan (Rojava) in northeastern Syria to assess the human rights situation, with particular focus on press freedom and the protection of journalists and media professionals in the region.

During a meeting in Erbil, Sjöstedt met with Bashdar Hassan, President of the International Rights Institute  (IRI); Hozan Qadir, President of Reporters Organization for Rights and Development; and Diler Ibrahim, head of the Al-Adhwaa newspaper office in Erbil.

They discussed ways to enhance cooperation and joint efforts in promoting press freedom and protecting human rights in the Kurdistan Region, Rojava, and the wider region.

Sjöstedt highlighted the importance of continuing humanitarian aid to Rojava until the ongoing crisis comes to an end. The meeting also addressed issues including human rights violations in Rojava, the state of freedom of expression, and broader human rights concerns in the Kurdistan Region, with an emphasis on expanding joint initiatives to safeguard fundamental rights.

The European Parliament member also welcomed the proposal for a delegation from the Kurdistan Region to visit Europe and coordinate meetings with MEPs to discuss the human rights situation and explore ways to strengthen its protection across the region.
