UK Rojava

More than 70 members of the UK Parliament, drawn from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and representing a wide range of political parties, have written to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper warning of a real and imminent threat of violence against the Kurdish people in Rojava, north-east Syria.

The cross-party letter, signed by parliamentarians from the governing Labour Party as well as the main opposition Conservative Party and other opposition groups, urges the British government to take immediate steps to protect Kurdish communities facing escalating dangers.

In their message, the MPs and peers stressed the UK’s moral responsibility towards the Kurds, highlighting their role in confronting ISIS. They noted that Britain is indebted to the many young Kurdish men and women who stood bravely against years of ISIS terror, arguing that decisive action now is the minimum required to honour those sacrifices.

The signatories warned that the current situation in Rojava requires swift and effective international engagement to safeguard civilians, preserve stability and prevent the emergence of a new humanitarian crisis in the region.

They called on the UK government to apply intensified political and diplomatic pressure to halt attacks and to ensure adequate protection for the population of north-east Syria. The letter underlined that expressions of concern alone are insufficient given the urgency of the situation.

The broad range of signatories reflects a rare and strong cross-party consensus within the UK Parliament on the need to protect the Kurdish people and support stability in Rojava at a critical moment for the region.
