French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that Europe must be prepared for further confrontations with the United States, describing the recent “Greenland moment” as a wake-up call to accelerate long-overdue economic reforms and strengthen the European Union’s global influence.

In interviews published in several European newspapers, Macron warned that Europe should not interpret the current easing of tensions with Washington as a permanent shift in relations, despite the apparent resolution of recent disputes over Greenland, trade and technology.

“When there’s a clear act of aggression, I think what we should do isn’t bow down or try to reach a settlement. I think we’ve tried that strategy for months. It’s not working,” Macron told several papers, including Le Monde and the Financial Times.

President Macron said the Trump administration was being "openly anti‑European" and seeking the EU’s "dismemberment".

"The U.S. will, in the coming months — that’s certain — attack us over digital regulation," President Macron added, warning about potential U.S. import tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump should the EU use its Digital Services Act to control tech companies.

The French president also renewed his call for fresh joint borrowing, including the issuance of eurobonds, arguing that such measures would enable the European Union to invest on a large scale and challenge the dominance of the US dollar.

EU leaders are set to meet in Brussels on Thursday for a summit focused on strengthening the bloc’s economy and enhancing its ability to compete with both the United States and China on the global stage.
