French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot is visiting Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region as part of diplomatic efforts focused on developments in Syria and regional security.

During the visit, Barrot is expected to meet Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi, with discussions centred on the political and security situation in Rojava, including recent understandings between SDF and Damascus.

French officials have previously underlined the importance of stability in Rojava and Syria, particularly with regard to security arrangements and the future of detention facilities holding suspected ISIS members. France has also consistently stressed the need for any political process in Syria to include Kurdish representation and to safeguard Kurdish rights.

Paris has reiterated its support for efforts that contribute to long-term stability in Syria, while emphasising the importance of full implementation of political and security agreements in line with international commitments.
