Rohilat Afrin, Commander-in-Chief of the Women’s Defence Units (YPJ), has expressed her gratitude to the people of the Kurdistan Region for their support to Western Kurdistan or Rojava (North and East Syria), stressing that Kurdish unity has become a decisive force against recent attacks.
In a statement released through YPJ media, Afrin addressed the people of the Kurdistan Region on behalf of the General Command of the YPJ. She referred to what she described as a major attack that took place nearly a month ago in Western Kurdistan, aimed at undermining Kurdish achievements and threatening the existence of the Kurdish people.
“A conspiracy was orchestrated to target the gains achieved and to launch a genocidal assault against the Kurdish people,” Afrin said. “However, thanks to the resistance of the people, this conspiracy was thwarted.”
She emphasised that defending Kurdish existence and dignity is a collective responsibility shared by all components of society. “This resistance has been a defense of existence and dignity, and we will continue it here and everywhere to protect this land. This is our fundamental duty,” she said.
Afrin highlighted the significance of public mobilisation in the Kurdistan Region, noting that recent demonstrations reflected a shared Kurdish identity beyond political or geographic divisions. “We have all seen in the South (Kurdistan Region) that Kurdistan is not divided into four parts — the Kurdish voice is one. This unified voice has become a major obstacle to the attacks,” she stated.
She also offered condolences to the family of Ahmed Hamin, a young Kurdish man from Kirkuk who was martyred during the fighting in Rojava, and to all Kurdish martyrs, describing them as the foundation of today’s resistance.
“Those who brought us to this day are our heroic martyrs. Even if the war has paused, it is thanks to the resistance of the people and the sacrifices made,” Afrin said.
According to Afrin, the response to the attacks marked a historic moment for Kurdish unity. “This is not the first time uprisings have occurred in Kurdistan’s history, but it is the first time the Kurdish people’s voice has united across all parts of Kurdistan. This gives us strength, morale, and pride, and deepens our commitment to struggle and resistance.”
She further condemned violence directed at women, stressing that women’s voices have risen together in response. Afrin said women across Kurdistan and the world have taken a clear stand against such acts, reaffirming the YPJ’s determination to confront attacks targeting women and society as a whole.
“Whatever happens, we will resist,” she said, adding that alongside resistance, the YPJ remains committed to pursuing a democratic solution that ensures safety and dignity for all communities.
Concluding her message, Afrin saluted the people of the Kurdistan Region once again. “Let us stand together to achieve victory. Our promise is clear: we will prevail in this cause, and we will never accept surrender or occupation.”
