The First Karkh Investigation Court has announced the start of legal proceedings against 1,387 members of the ISIS terrorist organisation who were recently transferred from detention facilities in Syria.
In a statement issued by the Supreme Judicial Council, the court confirmed that the investigations are being conducted by a panel of judges specialising in counter-terrorism cases. The council stressed that all detainees will be dealt with in line with Iraq’s legal and humanitarian obligations, in accordance with national legislation and recognised international standards.
The statement noted that the move forms part of Iraq’s broader efforts to conclude investigations and ensure accountability for individuals involved in ISIS crimes. These measures, it said, are being carried out under applicable laws and alongside international coordination aimed at addressing cases linked to acts that constitute genocide and crimes against humanity.
The council further indicated that the number of ISIS members expected to be transferred from Syria is likely to exceed 7,000. In this context, the National Centre for International Judicial Cooperation will play a key role in documenting cases and supplying investigative authorities and courts with previously archived documents and evidence to support ongoing proceedings.
