French President Emmanuel Macron held separate phone calls on Saturday, 31 January 2026, with General Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa to discuss ongoing developments in the region, the French Presidency reported on Sunday.
According the French Presidency, the French president followed up on mediation efforts undertaken in recent weeks and welcomed the permanent ceasefire agreement reached between the Syrian authorities and the SDF, stressing the importance of its full and effective implementation. He reaffirmed France’s full commitment to supporting the ceasefire and efforts aimed at maintaining stability on the ground.
The French president also stressed France’s strong commitment, alongside its partners, to continuing the fight against the ISIS terrorist organisation, in line with the shared security interests of France, the region, Europe and the United States.
France, he said, will continue to stand alongside Syria and the Syrian people, in coordination with international partners, in supporting a path toward stability, justice and reconstruction. He underlined that any lasting political solution must ensure a peaceful Syria that respects all its components, particularly its Kurdish populations, and remains fully engaged in the fight against terrorism.
