The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a statement marking the 22nd anniversary of the 1 February bombings, stressing the urgent need for unity among Kurdish political parties in order to confront the current challenges facing the Kurdish people.
The statement recalled the 1 February 2004 attacks, which targeted the PUK’s third headquarters and the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) second branch in Erbil, resulting in the martyrdom and injury of a number of party leaders, members and supporters, as well as several civilians. A total of 105 people were killed in the bombings, which were carried out on the first day of Eid al-Adha, transforming a day of celebration into one of mourning and plunging the city of Erbil into deep grief.
In its statement, the Political Bureau said:
“On the 22nd anniversary of the 1 February bombings, which targeted the third headquarters of the PUK and the second branch of the KDP, resulting in the martyrdom and injury of a number of leaders, members and supporters of both parties, as well as several civilians, the terrorists once again proved that they are enemies not only of humanity, democracy and freedom, but also of all social and religious values, as the attacks were carried out on the first day of Eid al-Adha, turning moments of joy and celebration into scenes of bloodshed and plunging the city of Erbil into deep grief.
As this painful anniversary is commemorated, our people once again face the threat of terrorism and the danger of genocide, with West Kurdistan (North and East Syria) emerging as the epicentre of this legitimate struggle. Kurds across Kurdistan and in the diaspora continue to stand in solidarity with their brothers and sisters, demonstrating a strong spirit of national and patriotic unity.
This moment demands that the political forces of Kurdistan rise to their responsibilities and respond to the aspirations of our people by strengthening unity, confronting these threats, and reinforcing the values of freedom.
Salute to the souls of the martyrs of 1 February, and to all the martyrs of Kurdistan.”
