US President Donald Trump has warned the United Kingdom that pursuing closer economic and business relations with China would be “very dangerous”, following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Beijing.

The warning came after Starmer met Chinese President Xi Jinping as part of a push to reset strained UK–China relations. The talks focused on trade, investment and diplomatic cooperation, with both sides signalling a willingness to deepen engagement.

Speaking in Washington, President Trump criticised the move, cautioning Britain against expanding business ties with Beijing and echoing long-standing US concerns over China’s growing global influence. His remarks underline Washington’s increasingly hard-line stance on China, particularly in the areas of trade, technology and security.

Downing Street has defended the Prime Minister’s approach, stressing that engagement with China does not come at the expense of the UK’s close alliance with the United States. Government officials said Britain would continue to pursue a “balanced and pragmatic” foreign policy, maintaining strong transatlantic ties while engaging with major global economies.

Chinese officials described the visit as a positive step towards stabilising relations, highlighting cooperation on trade and global challenges, including climate change.
