The General Directorate of Dams in the Kurdistan Region has announced a significant increase in water levels across the Region’s dams this year, marking a sharp improvement compared with previous years.

Rahman Khani, Director General of the Dams and Water Reservoirs Department in the Kurdistan Region, told PUKMEDIA that water levels have risen by around 200% this year as a result of heavy rainfall across the Region.

“Water levels have increased by 200% this year thanks to the heavy rainfall that the Kurdistan Region has experienced,” Khani said.

He explained that while the rise in water storage in some dams amounted to around 100 million cubic metres last year, this figure has climbed to approximately 300 million cubic metres this year. According to Khani, the recent rainfall has played a crucial role in boosting water reserves across all dams in the Kurdistan Region.

The increase is expected to ease pressure on water resources, supporting agricultural activity and improving water security amid concerns over recurring droughts in recent years.
