Australia is grappling with an intense heatwave that has fuelled dangerous bushfires across several states, forcing the evacuation of towns and placing emergency services on high alert, as Melbourne recorded its hottest day in 17 years.
Authorities said extreme temperatures, low humidity and strong winds have combined to create severe fire conditions, particularly in parts of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Multiple fires have burned out of control, prompting evacuation orders for residents in at-risk communities as firefighters work to contain rapidly spreading blazes.
In Victoria, the searing heat pushed temperatures in Melbourne to levels not seen since the late 2000s, straining power supplies and health services. Ambulance services reported a rise in heat-related emergencies, while energy providers warned of possible outages amid surging demand for cooling.
Emergency officials urged residents to heed warnings, follow evacuation instructions and avoid travel in affected areas. “These are dangerous conditions, and fires can move quickly,” fire authorities said, stressing that lives remain at risk.
Elsewhere, rural communities have been particularly vulnerable, with fires threatening homes, farmland and critical infrastructure. Relief centres have been established for displaced residents, while aerial firefighting assets have been deployed where conditions allow.
Climate scientists note that Australia is experiencing increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves, which heighten the risk of catastrophic bushfires. Officials have reiterated calls for preparedness, warning that extreme weather events are likely to become more common as the summer progresses.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely, with forecasts indicating that high temperatures may persist in the coming days, prolonging the threat posed by bushfires across the country.
