The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), have repelled attacks launched by mercenaries affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government on several villages in the city of Kobani, north of Syria, exercising their legitimate right to self-defence and inflicting significant losses on the attackers.

According to the SDF Media Centre, the attacks took place despite a declared ceasefire. The mercenaries attempted to advance towards the villages of Sheikhlar and Zirik, west of Kobani, as well as Jalabiya, south of the city. SDF and YPJ forces successfully repelled the assaults, leading to clashes on several fronts.

Sources reported that on the Jalabiya front, two armoured vehicles and several other military vehicles belonging to the attackers were destroyed. Additional losses were inflicted on the attacking forces in the village of Sheikhlar.

On the Zirik front, west of Kobani, intense clashes erupted and fighting continues as attacks on the area persist.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed that villages east of Jalabiya in the Kobani countryside have witnessed renewed violations by factions affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government, despite the extension of the ceasefire agreement reached through a mutual understanding between the Interim Government and the SDF.

The Observatory also reported armed clashes between these factions and the SDF in rural areas east of Jalabiya, noting that there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The SOHR has also reported that tribal groups loyal to the Syrian Interim Government have launched a widespread arrest campaign in the eastern and western Deir ez-Zor countryside, targeting individuals accused of “affiliation with the SDF.” The operation primarily focused on members of local tribes suspected of supporting or having ties to the SDF.

According to the Observatory, members of these tribal groups, backed by local militias, raided multiple homes in villages and towns including Gharanih, Daranj, Al-Shuhail, Abu Hamam, and Dhiban, detaining dozens of civilians labelled as “collaborators” or supporters of the SDF.

Sources confirmed that the campaign forms part of a broader military and security escalation following operations carried out by the government forces in several areas of northern and eastern Syria.

The campaign has heightened tension and anxiety across the Deir ez-Zor countryside.
