Several members of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) parliamentary bloc announced on Sunday their solidarity with Rojava (North and East Syria) women and took part in the “braid” campaign, which has gained widespread attention across social media platforms.

The symbolic gesture took place inside the Iraqi parliament, where the MPs expressed their support by declaring: “Greetings to the braid that was cut, but not broken.”

In a statement, the bloc said that the incident in question “is not merely an attack on an individual, but a deliberate targeting of the will and identity of an entire people.” It stressed that, in Kurdish culture, a braid is not simply a hairstyle, but a symbol of dignity, strength, and identity, adding that solidarity expressed from Baghdad should genuinely reflect the pain endured by the victim of this reprehensible act.

The statement further noted: “Today, we stand in solidarity with the Syrian Kurdish girl, so that our voice from Baghdad may echo her pain,” emphasising that roots always remain deep, regardless of attempts to sever them.

A widespread campaign has began by Kurdish women around the world, who have been sharing videos of themselves braiding their hair in solidarity with women fighters in Rojava.

The campaign follows the circulation of a video on social media last week showing a member of the Syrian army holding a braid of hair and claiming it had been cut from the head of a Kurdish fighter after she was killed during clashes in the city of Raqqa, north of Syrian. The footage sparked widespread anger and condemnation.
