Kobane.
The city of Kobane has been under a severe siege since yesterday, as multiple factions affiliated with the Syrian National Transitional Council launched attacks on the city’s outskirts from all directions. Tens of thousands of civilians are now facing grave danger.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the escalation coincides with a complete blackout of internet and communications, intensifying fears of massacres and preventing the documentation of violations or the transmission of distress calls to the outside world.
Local sources confirm that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly, with critical shortages of food and medical supplies, compounded by ongoing power and water outages since the onset of fighting. Panic prevails among residents, particularly women, children, and the elderly, as bombardments and threats continue.
SOHR emphasised that civilians are urgently appealing to authorities, international organisations, and guarantor parties to intervene immediately to halt the attacks, enforce the ceasefire, and protect civilians. The Observatory warned that continued international silence risks a new humanitarian catastrophe, adding to a long history of civilian suffering.
Fierce clashes are concentrated in the villages of Shuyukh, Hamdash, Qubba, and Ja’ada, where transitional government forces are attempting to advance. During these confrontations, a civilian from Kharab al-Ashq was killed by sniper fire, while a young woman was killed and another was injured by shelling, highlighting the severe impact on civilians.
Residents face mounting fears of further massacres as military operations continue, with critically ill patients unable to access medical care and a severe shortage of basic food supplies, including baby formula. Vulnerable groups such as children, women, and the elderly are bearing the brunt of the siege.
SOHR called on all parties to restore basic services immediately, ensure civilians are kept out of harm’s way, and for the international community and humanitarian organisations to take urgent action to protect the population of Kobane from further harm.
