Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn has called on the UK government to act urgently to protect Kurdish communities in Syria amid renewed fighting.

In a letter to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Corbyn highlighted the collapse of a ceasefire between Syrian government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, which displaced over 155,000 civilians—most of them Kurdish. He warned that further escalation risks widespread harm to Kurdish towns, persecution of minorities, and mass displacement.

Corbyn stressed that Kurds, estimated at 40 million worldwide, remain one of the largest stateless ethnic groups and deserve the right to self-determination, local governance, and protection of their language and culture. He urged the UK to support inclusive negotiations, demand civilian protections, and back independent monitoring of human rights violations.

“After more than a decade of war, Kurdish communities, like all Syrians, deserve peace, security, and dignity,” Corbyn wrote.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has not yet commented on the letter.
