Finnish researcher and author Kristiina Koivunen has warned of increasing security risks for Europe following the withdrawal of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from the Al‑Hol camp in north‑east Syria.

The SDF Media Centre announced the redeployment of its forces from Al‑Hol, citing international indifference to the ongoing threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) and the failure of the global community to assume responsibility. In an official statement, the SDF said the move was necessary to redeploy troops to the outskirts of northern Syrian cities facing rising security threats.

Koivunen reacted to the announcement, saying: “The situation is also dangerous for us Europeans. Kurds no longer guard ISIS prisoners in Al‑Hol camp, and when the terrorists flee, some come to Europe.”

Her statement underscores the potential security implications for Europe arising from the SDF’s redeployment and highlights concerns over the lack of international engagement in managing ISIS detainees in the camp.

Kristiina Koivunen is a Finnish political researcher, author, and journalist with extensive expertise on Kurdish affairs and Middle Eastern geopolitics. She has conducted field research in the Kurdistan Region, taught at universities in the region, and authored several books and articles on Kurdish society, politics, and conflicts.
