Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, visited Ain al-Assad Air Base in western Anbar province on Wednesday, just days after the base was formally handed over by the Global Coalition.
According to the Prime Minister’s Media Office, al-Sudani’s visit marked the start of a field tour to assess the readiness of Iraqi forces responsible for securing the Iraqi–Syrian border.
During the tour, the Prime Minister reviewed the levels of operational preparedness and the movements of deployed units and formations. He also witnessed the take-off of a squadron of four F-16 fighter jets participating in a tactical exercise encompassing reconnaissance, surveillance, patrol, and rapid response missions.
The Iraqi armed forces assumed full control of Ain al-Assad Air Base earlier this week following the withdrawal of coalition forces. The transfer was carried out in line with the 2014 security agreement between Iraq and the United States, and Iraqi units have now completed deployment and positioning within their designated areas of operation according to established plans.
