The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in the Iraqi parliament has called on the international community to take immediate action to halt the ongoing bloodshed and attacks against the Kurdish population in Syria.
On Tuesday, the PUK faction issued a statement, expressing deep concern regarding the escalating tensions in Rojava, saying: "We believe that resorting to war and violence to address political matters and the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people in Syria is a dangerous course of action, one that spreads unrest and anxiety across the region."
The faction highlighted: "Rather than attempting to heal the deep wounds inflicted by the Assad regime on all communities in Syria—particularly the Kurdish people—and taking steps towards fundamental solutions, including a constitution that guarantees the rights of Kurds and other communities in a post-Assad Syria, the Syrian interim government has instead resorted to attacking the Kurdish population, with the aim of carrying out a massacre."
"The escalation of fighting in Syria will inflict serious damage on regional peace and democracy, benefiting only ISIS and other terrorist groups. In particular, the breaking of prisons and the release of hundreds of dangerous ISIS fighters poses a grave future threat, allowing them to regroup and carry out further acts of terror," the statement read.
PUK faction also cautioned: "The international community, along with the global coalition against ISIS, bears a humanitarian, historical, and moral responsibility. The Kurdish people in the West have sacrificed over 15,000 lives and seen tens of thousands wounded in the fight to eliminate the threat posed by ISIS terrorists and to protect humanity from the brutality of the organisation. While world powers and international bodies have repeatedly recognised this fact, there is now a disturbing silence regarding the attacks by the Syrian interim government on the very heroes who defeated ISIS."
The PUK faction concluded: "We call on the international community to take urgent action to halt the bloodshed and attacks against the Kurdish people in Syria. The Kurdish people should be supported in achieving their rights in Syria through political and constitutional means, rather than through acts of massacre and extermination. We also urge the Iraqi parliament, government, and all political parties to take a firm stance to prevent the massacre of the Kurdish population in Syria and to adopt stronger measures to safeguard Iraq from any resulting threats.
