Iraqi First Lady Urges International Action Amid Humanitarian Crisis in Rojava
Iraq 01:43 PM - 2026-01-20Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed.
Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed has issued a humanitarian appeal calling on the international community to intervene in Rojava (North and East Syria), warning of widespread violence, civilian displacement, and the escalating humanitarian and political consequences of recent attacks by Syrian government-linked forces and armed groups.
The First Lady's appeal read:
With profound sorrow and grief, we are receiving painful news about the Kurdish people in eastern Syria (Rojava), where civilians, women, children and men are being subjected to a brutal campaign by groups within the Syrian army, alongside jihadists and ISIS members who were released yesterday from Al-Shaddadi and other prisons — all carried out in the name of the Syrian government. There is a large wave of violence and civilian displacement, with families fleeing to unknown destinations.
I call on the international community to act and to pressure a legitimate ceasefire. I warn of the humanitarian and political consequences that will follow.
Every community has an inherent and equal right to life, freedom and security, regardless of race, gender, religion or ethnicity.
Through the media, and from private sources, we are witnessing and hearing about the most horrific inhumane practices by forces claiming to act on behalf of the Syrian Army against civilians, who have already endured fourteen years of war and displacement.
Responsibility for what is taking place in Syria lies with the states that contributed to brokering the agreement signed between Mr. Ahmad al-Sharaa and Mr. Mazloum Abdi. This agreement has clearly failed to uphold.
