Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to five years in prison, in the first court ruling linked to his attempted imposition of martial law in December 2024. The verdict marks a significant moment in South Korea’s political and judicial history.

Yoon was found guilty of abuse of power and obstruction of justice in connection with his failed attempt to deploy martial law during a period of mass protests against his administration. The court ruling emphasised the severity of his actions, noting that they undermined democratic institutions and posed a risk to civil liberties.

The five-year sentence is the first outcome in a series of ongoing criminal cases facing Yoon, who remains a highly polarising figure in South Korean politics. Legal experts expect him to appeal the verdict, which means the final outcome could be prolonged through the judicial process.

The court also noted the importance of upholding democratic norms and ensuring that no leader is above the law, a principle that has been central to the prosecution’s case against Yoon.

Yoon Suk Yeol, who served as president from 2022 until his removal, continues to face scrutiny over multiple allegations, including corruption and misuse of state power.
