Lindsey Graham, U.S Senator.
Senior United States Senator Lindsey Graham has voiced strong concern and warned that any military escalation against Syrian Kurdish forces could have serious consequences for regional stability and U.S. national security interests.
In a statement, Graham said he is increasingly alarmed that Damascus may seek to use force against the Syrian Kurds, whom he described as Washington’s “strongest ally” in the long-running campaign to defeat ISIS in Syria.
The senator highlighted the critical role Kurdish forces continue to play in detaining approximately 9,000 ISIS prisoners, many of whom are considered among the most dangerous members of the extremist group. He stressed that preventing their return to the battlefield remains a vital U.S. national security priority.
“It is in our vital national security interest that these prisoners do not go back to the battlefield,” Graham said, underlining that the current arrangements must not be disrupted.
While expressing support for giving the new Syrian government a “fair chance,” Graham warned that any escalation of attacks on Kurdish forces would fundamentally alter Washington’s approach.
He stated that such a move would likely trigger broad bipartisan support in the United States to push back against any military action targeting the Kurds.
Graham also firmly rejected the idea of transferring responsibility for guarding ISIS detainees to either the Syrian army or Turkish forces, making clear that this would be unacceptable at the current stage.
