The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has confirmed on Monday, 5 January 2025, that it has submitted Nizar Amedi as its sole nominee for the post of the Iraqi President to the parliament.
According to PUK Spokesperson Karwan Gaznay, Amedi is the party’s official and only candidate for the presidency.
Iraqi Parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi has previously opened the nomination door for a period of three days, with Monday marking the final day for submissions.
On 30 December 2025, the Iraqi Parliament elected the presidency, paving the way for the current nomination process.
Nizar Amedi's Profile
Nizar Mohammed Saeed Mohammed, known as Nizar Amedi, was born on 6 February 1968 in the Amedi District of Duhok Province. He is married and has four sons. Amedi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mosul University and is fluent in both Kurdish and Arabic.
Amedi has had a long and distinguished political and organisational career. From 1993 to 2003, he worked in the Office of the Secretary-General of the PUK. He later served as an advisor to Presidents Mam Jalal, Fuad Masum, and Dr Barham Ahmad Salih from 2005 to 2022. In 2022, he became a member of the State Management Coalition and was appointed Minister of Environment of Iraq, a position he held until 2024.
Within the PUK, Amedi has held key leadership positions. He was a member of the PUK’s Leadership Council. He later became a member of the PUK Political Bureau in 2023 and, in 2024, was appointed Head of the Political Bureau of the PUK in Baghdad. Currently, Nizar Amedi is the party’s candidate for the post of President of Iraq.
